The Heron Basics
Beginner Reading Program smoothly brings first-time readers up to a strong
reading competence at the mid-first-grade reading level. Students get a very
solid grounding in phonetics and at the same time do a large volume of reading.
The child learns how to decode or sound out unfamiliar words, giving him a
foundation for independent reading. Parallel to this, the program takes the
child through an abundance of small beginning books, simple pre-primers and
primers, and he is instructed closely in word recognition and understanding, as
well as reading and comprehending text. The phonetics and reading instruction
are coupled with a growing amount of independent reading. All this provides a
rounded approach that feeds a child's natural impulse to learn to read, builds
his reading vocabulary and provides him with the tools he needs to read well
independently. The enjoyment and pleasure he derives from reading which is
considered crucial to his progress, is carefully sustained.
The Heron Basics Reading Program for
Forms 1 and 2 develops a child's interest and ability to read. A child
continues his grounding in phonetics and acquires, at the same time, a more
extensive reading vocabulary as he progresses up through six different reading
levels covering the second half of first-grade, then second and third grade
reading.
Each student is instructed individually, and his progress is
carefully monitored to ensure he can read easily on each level before going on
to the next. Independent reading is encouraged, and an abundance of books and
time are made available. Because of the strong foundation, students will read
remarkably large quantities. In addition to twelve
instructional readers that are closely monitored, each child reads on the
average about six hundred books on his own as he progresses from mid
first-grade through to the end of third-grade reading! Many children, with
gusto, read more. When they finish this program, students have a noticeable
thirst for reading, and are ready to start fourth-grade
materials.
For any child, gaining
the ability to express his thoughts in writing is a huge step on the path to
becoming an adult. The writing program (for grade 1 through grade 3) teaches a
child the fundamentals of writing. Its format is a daily writing period made up
of three tightly interwoven "legs"; a handwriting leg (in which a child learns,
drills and uses good penmanship); a writing leg (in which he does a lot of
written expression); and a spelling leg (in which he learns basic spelling
facts and words useful to his writing). First he tackles the basics of letter
formation. As soon as he has learned this, he is afforded many opportunities
for written expression. Notes, lists, letters, stories, poems,
plays, books - these are what writing is really for, and further instruction in
handwriting, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure are all done in the
context of such "real" writing. By the end of the program a student has a
strong interest in writing. He can, with little difficulty, clearly express his
own thoughts and ideas using good handwriting, spelling, simple punctuation and
correct sentences and is ready to engage in fourth-grade writing
activities.
The
math seminars for grades K through 5 provide a high level of communication in
math and produce a solid understanding of the key math concepts. Lessons are
given seminar-style, providing lively classroom interaction, followed by
mathematics drilling.
All of these programs are based on the educational breakthroughs
of American educator, L. Ron Hubbard. For more information about these very
