The Heron Basics Forms
3-6 Reading Program (covering reading for grades 4 through 8) takes up where the Forms 1 and 2 Program ends. A literature-based program, its goal (and routine result) is a student who truly enjoys reading, and who reads widely and well. As a first action a student bridges from instructed to fully independent reading, then builds his vocabulary and overall ability in an hour of daily, supervised reading. He chooses from a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books selected for high-quality writing, significant subject matter and positive values. Over a thousand such books have been sorted into a series of twelve reading levels according to vocabulary, general reading level and complexity of ideas. Reading many books from each level a student progresses gradually from reading elementary books to Dickens' Great Expectations. Along the way, he is exposed to a wide spectrum of world geography and cultures, historical events and human experience. A student completing this program has a strong foundation for reading widely in the world of literature.

The Heron Basics Forms 3-5 Spelling Program (grades 4 through 8) takes a thorough approach to teaching spelling. While learning, on an individually tailored basis, to spell a wide range of words, a student also learns the fundamental principles and rules of English spelling. Spelling vowel sounds, typically a troublesome area is learned thoroughly and well. Then a student advances through guidelines and rules for adding prefixes, suffixes and spelling contractions, compound words, plurals, possessives and commonly confused homonyms. Later he branches out into Greek and Latin word elements, derivations and grammar as keys to spelling, and "irregular" words taken from other languages. He also learns to proofread effectively and by the end can produce (without using a spellchecker) a five hundred word essay with few or no spelling errors.

The Heron Basics Mathematics Seminar Program for grades K through 5 provides a high level of communication in math and produces a solid understanding of the key math concepts. Lessons are given seminar-style, providing lively classroom interaction, followed by mathematics drilling.

The Heron Basics Mathematics Levels 6-8 Program (grades 6 through 8) is based on study guides, allowing the students to proceed with supervised independent study through the program. It continues the emphasis on full understanding of key math concepts and terminology. New topics in these subjects are introduced in this program: fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, consumer math, probability and statistics, ratios, percents, integers, and trigonometry. The program includes a detailed testing program so that the student's assignments can be precisely tailored. The student only does those chapters or parts of chapters where he is deficient. Thus, well-prepared students can get through the program very quickly.

All of these programs are based on the educational breakthroughs of American educator, L. Ron Hubbard. For more information about these very successful methods, please visit www.appliedscholastics.org.
